California Highway Patrol investigates fatal truck accident

According to police, a Sept. 11 accident in Ontario involving a big rig killed a motorist. Police suspect that alcohol was a contributing factor in the deadly event.

Police stated that the incident took place at about 1 a.m. on Haven Avenue, where a 40-year-old man operating a big rig crossed the centerline and veered into oncoming traffic. The semi-truck collided head-on with a sedan. As a result of the crash, the driver of the sedan suffered fatal injuries. Subsequently, the driver of the semi-truck fled the scene and traveled onto State Route 60, where he became involved single-vehicle accident, police stated. The truck driver fled that scene on foot, allegedly.

Subsequently, a motorist traveling on State Route 60 struck the abandoned semi-truck. The motorist did not suffer any injuries in the crash, which police described as minor.

Police located the alleged hit-and-run trucker a relatively short distance from the disabled big rig. He was reportedly walking east on the highway. Police took him into custody on multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony DUI while operating a commercial vehicle.

If, hypothetically, a preponderance of evidence from this case were to substantiate the police's suspicion that alcohol contributed to the fatal event, then the at-fault driver might encounter not just criminal repercussions but also civil consequences. For, California residents who suffer economic and noneconomic damages in connection with fatal accidents caused by drunk drivers may pursue civil action. For example, families of victims in DUI accidents may file a wrongful death lawsuit against the drunk driver, seeking restitution for end-of-life expenses, lost earnings and other damages they suffered in relation to the fatal incident.
