On September 28, a Fresno County accident claimed the life of one person and left five others injured. One of the drivers involved in the incident faces drunk-driving charges, highway officials said.
According to authorities, the fatal accident transpired at the intersection of Dinuba and Englehart avenues near Reedley at about 9 p.m., when a 30-year-old man driving a pickup truck ran a stop sign at the intersection and hit a sedan carrying four people. The impact of the crash caused a passenger in the pickup truck, a 24-year-old man, to be ejected from the truck. Officials at the scene of the crash pronounced him dead.
The sedan's four occupants were also injured as a result of the collision. The youngest among them is 16 and the oldest, 23, authorities stated. Emergency personnel transported all four of them to a hospital for treatment of their injuries. However, the extent of their injuries was not clear immediately following the incident.
The 30-year-old driver of the pickup truck was also injured in the crash, reportedly. He received emergency transport to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. Law enforcement officials stated that they planned to take him into custody on felony DUI charges upon his release from the hospital. Reportedly, the intersection where the accident took place has been the site of many previous accidents and near-misses.
If evidence from this case were to suggest that an intoxicated driver caused the accident, a civil lawsuit may be invoked. For, families of people who die in DUI accidents have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim, and injured victims of DUI accidents have a right to file a personal injury claim against the at-fault driver. In both types of lawsuits, claimants may seek compensation for economic damages they suffered as a result of the incident.
