FedEx receives 16th lawsuit in fatal Orland student bus crash

The husband of the 53-year-old bus driver, who, along with five students and three adult chaperones, was killed in a collision between a bus carrying high school students and a FedEx semi-truck, filed a lawsuit against the company on Oct. 29. His wrongful death claim is the 16th lawsuit filed against the company for the Interstate 5 crash that occurred near Orland on Apr. 10.

According to court documents, the bus was carrying a number of high school students from various Southern California high schools on a field trip to North Humboldt University at the time of the crash. On board were the students, the chaperones and the driver. As the bus headed north on I-5, a southbound FedEx semi pulling two trailers inexplicably allegedly drove across the median of the interstate, first striking the rear of a 2013 Nissan Altima before colliding head-on with the bus.

The collision caused both the truck and the bus to burst into flames, causing serious damage to the front end of both. The bus driver and the FedEx driver were among those killed in the fiery accident. FedEx has extended condolences to the families of those injured and killed in the horrific accident.

When people are killed in an accident that is the fault of a negligent truck driver, their families often suffer incomprehensible losses. In addition to the grief and emotional pain they may suffer, families are often left with significant financial losses as a result of their loved one's unexpected death. By filing a wrongful death claim, the family can recover damages for both their economic and noneconomic losses. When the negligent driver is also killed, his or her estate may hold liability. Additionally, the employer of negligent truck drivers may be sued as a result of their employee's negligence.
