The California Highway Patrol reported a man was seriously injured after his parked car was struck by an alleged drunk driver in Colton on March 9. The incident took place at approximately 6:45 p.m.
Police were dispatched to the Wrightwood Mini Mart on the 1300 block of Highway 2 after receiving initial reports of a car colliding with a pedestrian. After investigating, officers determined that the victim had pulled up to the gas pumps and exited his parked vehicle. Shortly afterward, he noticed a sedan speeding down the highway toward the mini mart. The sedan then lost control and became airborne before plowing into the victim's car. The impact pinned the victim between his car and a concrete pillar near the gas pump.
The victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. Other witnesses at the scene estimated that the sedan was traveling around 65 mph in a 35 mph zone. The sedan driver, a 22-year-old Phelan man, was arrested and charged with suspicion of felony DUI. He was held at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto in lieu of $100,000 bail. The Victorville CHP Office is investigating the accident.
Drunk driving accidents such as this one can cause serious injuries that require weeks or months of recovery time. In some cases, a victim may be left with a permanent disability. Individuals who are hurt by a drunk driver may wish to pursue a personal injury lawsuit against the at-fault driver with the aid of an attorney. By using accident investigation reports and toxicology results, it may be possible to prove the driver is responsible for a victim's injuries and to obtain compensation for medical costs and other expenses that have been incurred.
