California drivers may be falling asleep at the wheel

According to statistics reported by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drowsy driving is on the rise in the United States. In an effort to educate drivers, AAA routinely conducts Traffic Safety Culture Index surveys. About 96 percent of those queried in this study believe that drowsy driving is inexcusable behavior on the roadways. However, AAA reports that since 2010, fatal crashes involving drowsy drivers are up from 16.5 percent to 21 percent in 2014.

Even though many drivers tend to think more about the driving conduct of others, 37 percent of those surveyed admitted to falling asleep at the wheel at least once during their lifetime. About 11 percent of those survey respondents owned up to drowsy driving in the past year.

AAA is attempting to help educate drivers about the risks associated with drowsy driving. Approximately 328,000 car accidents per year involve drowsy drivers, and about 6,400 of those result in fatalities. The data shows men are more likely than women are to get behind the wheel while drowsy, and many fatal crashes involving sleepy drivers include just the one vehicle.

When motor vehicle accidents occur, the police investigation may reveal any number of causes. Those people who suffer injuries or experience the loss of a loved one because of a car accident might seek the advice of a personal injury attorney. Victims of a car accident may expect to incur damages such as medical expenses or lost wages. An attorney who is familiar with state law regarding incidents of drowsy or distracted driving could assist in obtaining accident investigation reports and helping individuals in filing a civil lawsuit.
