Allegedly drunk driver kills four

California residents may have heard about the horrific crash that occurred in Long Island when a pickup truck slammed into a limo carrying eight young women, killing four of them. The accident took place on July 18 as the women were returning from visiting area wineries. They had hired the limo to be safe while drinking.

The pickup truck driver reportedly admitted to drinking beer prior to the accident. After it occurred, he stayed at the scene for about 15 minutes before walking away, scaling a fence and then allegedly fleeing down a steep embankment. He was caught by law enforcement officers and brought back to the scene of the accident.

The man was taken to the hospital as were the four surviving women. He is currently facing misdemeanor DUI charges, although police indicated they are waiting on the results of toxicology tests to determine if his charges will be upgraded. The four women who did survive the accident reportedly all suffered serious injuries and remain in the hospital. Reportedly, the limo driver was making a u-turn at the intersection when the pickup truck slammed into the car. The limo driver said that he did not see the truck. He tested negative for substances and was also injured in the collision.

In this case, it is possible that both the limo driver as well as the pickup driver would both be held responsible in a civil lawsuit. When fatal accidents like this occur, the families of the victims who are killed may file wrongful death lawsuits against the negligent parties. Additionally, since the limo driver was working, the employer may also hold responsibility. Through a lawsuit, families may seek to recover damages for both their economic and noneconomic losses.
