Preventing drowsy driving with technology

Drowsy driving is an increasing problem in today's society. There are no clear statistics about the percentage of accidents that involve drowsy driving because it is often not noted in police reports. However, the CDC estimates that about 25 percent of fatal crashes involve drivers who were fatigued. California drivers might benefit from learning about new ways to prevent this type of behavior.

The data on drowsy driving suggests that drivers who sleep less than six hours at night, fall asleep during the day or who snore have a higher chance of dozing off while driving. A lot of fatal accidents involving drowsy driving take place at night and in highways. Drowsy driving can vary from dozing off to falling asleep completely, which means the driver has no awareness. Some studies have also shown that the effects on the mind and body of a driver who has not slept for 24 hours are similar to those on a driver with a 0.10 BAC.

Prevention of drowsy driving is a concern. The way prevention seems to be developing is through technology. Built-in prevention systems are growing in large trucks and even passenger vehicles from companies such as Chevrolet and Mazda. There are also lane and road departure systems that can reduce the rate of drivers who end up off road by up to 40%. A driver fatigue alarm that connects from a cellphone to a driver's ear is another innovation. There are also other alarms and Apps that can be used.

A person who has been injured in a motor vehicle accident that was caused by a fatigued or otherwise negligent driver may want to speak with a personal injury attorney to determine the recourse that may be available. The attorney can use police reports as well as other evidence to form the basis of of a lawsuit that would seek the appropriate damages from the responsible party.
