Injury symptoms to watch out for after a crash

California residents who have been in one know that that a car accident takes seconds but can have significant consequences. Sometimes, after what seems like a harmless accident, symptoms can appear that can indicate a more complicated issue resulting from an unseen injury during the collision. There are some symptoms that should not be ignored in order to prevent further complications and to seek appropriate treatment.

These symptoms include those related to whiplash, such as numbness and pain or stiffness in the neck and shoulder area. It is estimated that about 20 percent of people who have been involved in a rear-end car crash might suffer from whiplash. This might result in injuries to the spinal column and neck. These might be serious enough to require x-rays, CT scans or MRIs. Back pain is another symptom often experienced after a crash. This can translate to a damaged vertebrae or injured ligaments, nerves or muscles. People involved in an accident might also experience abdominal swelling or pain, as well as dark purple bruises, fainting spells or dizziness, which might all be signs of internal bleeding.

Brain injuries might manifest through headaches or through changes in the personality or physical functions of a person who has been involved in an accident. Headaches can also mean serious concussions or a blood clot to the brain. Changes in personality and function might be shown through memory loss, difficulty with vision or hearing and even depression. People involved in car accidents can also experience PTSD in the days after the incident.

It is always best to check with medical professionals when exhibiting any of these signs. These injuries might also be included as damages in a lawsuit against the responsible driver even if they develop during the aftermath of an accident and can be shown to have originated with the collision. A personal injury attorney can be of assistance in this regard.
