Research links Uber to DUI fatality drop

Many people have been making extensive use of ride-sharing services such as Uber in recent years, and a recent study suggests that this is contributing to a drop in fatal accidents related to drunk driving. Researchers at Temple University reached this conclusion by examining data gathered in California between 2009 and 2014. The information found in this time frame correlates Uber's emergence with a drop in such fatal collisions, validating previous studies released from within the ride-sharing industry.

Research showed that the introduction of the Uber X service lowered DUI-related deaths between 3.6 and 5.6 percent. Approximately 13,000 people die from crashes involving drunk drivers yearly in the United States. The study accordingly proposes that nationwide Uber X availability might save around 500 lives and offset $1.3 billion dollars in economic damage yearly.

The researchers also voiced concerns regarding the effects of measures meant to protect taxi businesses in some cities. By limiting the number of vehicles allowed on the road at one time, a situation might arise where more intoxicated people choose to drive because of a lack of available transportation. As an alternative to ordinances limiting ride-sharing services, the study proposes some deregulation for the heavily regulated taxi industry to help its businesses stay competitive while avoiding a transportation shortage.

When people fail to make responsible decisions at the end of the night and trigger drunk driving accidents, others often sustain serious injuries or are killed as a result. A personal injury attorney representing an injured plaintiff may use the testimony of witnesses, toxicology test results and a police accident report in a lawsuit seeking damages from the impaired driver.
