Current vehicle safety and possible improvements

While continual strides are being made to make driving safer, car accidents in California and around the country still pose significant risks as 32,719 traffic accident fatalities occurred in 2013 nationwide. This makes automobile travel one of the more dangerous parts of life, but some things can make a difference when it comes to road safety.

The next time one moves, factoring in the distance between a residence and workplace could increase one's safety. The risk of an accident is less likely when traveling a smaller distance. When a person cuts two miles off his or her round-trip commute, this results in driving approximately 500 fewer miles a year, changing the likelihood of a fatal car crash from one in 30,400 to one in 36,500 based upon National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.

People's choices can reduce the number of fatal accidents, but technology improvements may play the largest role in making the road safer. Imposing safety standards for vehicles has already had a big impact since the federal government started doing this in 1968 by requiring seat belts in automobiles. The NHTSA estimates that vehicle safety features helped prevent 27,600 lives in 2012, while the average number of lives saved annually between 1960 and 2012 was 11,575.

There are many ways to stay safe while in a vehicle, but preventable accidents sometimes occur anyway. When a car crash takes place because another driver acts negligently, such as running a red light or being distracted by a cellphone, a person who is injured as a result may want to have the assistance of an attorney in seeking compensation for medical expenses and other damages that have been sustained.
