Light snow or ice should make people slow down

As winter takes hold, California motorists need to make certain they remain aware of the road conditions when they drive. Many accidents occur even when there is a light dusting of snow or ice at times when drivers may be unaware of the state of the road.

One of the major issues is that it takes drivers time to adjust their driving behavior when winter starts in. People also have problems with perception, especially when road conditions change quickly due to the start of weather. According to the National Weather Service, even 1 inch or less of snow or a light amount of ice can lead to pileups and other accident types.

The NWS often issues weather advisories when conditions are expected to change. They recommend that people listen to those advisories and take heed of the information provided. People may want to slow down when snow or sleet first start to fall, as roads may be slicker than they think. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released data from 2004 to 2013 demonstrating that close to a quarter of all accidents occurring during that time period were due to weather conditions, with 17 percent of those happening while it was snowing or sleeting, 14 percent happening on snowy or slushy roads and 13 percent of those occurring when roads were icy.

Driving too fast for conditions is a type of negligent driving behavior about which drivers need to be mindful. Even if people are traveling at the speed limit, if the conditions call for a slower speed, they may be held responsible if they cause a car crash. People who are injured in such an accident may want to consider obtaining the assistance of an attorney in filing a personal injury lawsuit against the driver who was traveling too fast for the weather.
