What causes brain injuries in children?

Children are works in progress. This is particularly true when it comes to their mental development. As parents, we work to ensure that they grow in safe, but still stimulating, environments. We challenge them to try new things while rushing out to be a human safety net when needed.

Some scrapes, bruises and tears are expected, but most play sessions and outings end without serious injury. When serious injury does occur, we need to take extra precautions to ensure their development is not permanently impacted. This is particularly true when it comes to brain injuries.

Although much is to be learned about the impact of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) on a child's development, one thing is clear: treatment can help get those who suffer these injuries back on the right track.

What are some common causes of TBIs in children?

A new study from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds that the rate of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) on playgrounds is on the rise.

The study reviewed data spanning over eight years, from 2005 to 2013, with over 21,000 cases involving children under the age of 15. Researchers found that the majority of these playground accidents occurred on falls from monkey bars and playground gyms, but swings were a very close second.

Although playing at a playground can lead to injury, this is not the only cause of TBIs in children. Children can also suffer from TBIs when involved in car accidents and bicycle accidents.

What can be done to reduce the impact of a TBI?

It is very important to get treatment for a TBI.

Although treatment is important, it is also costly. Covering the costs of associated medical and rehabilitative bills can be difficult. As a result, anyone that is injured due to another's negligent or reckless actions should take the accident seriously. The costs can extend far beyond the immediate bills. Years of bills may be associated with the accident.

If the accident is the result of another's negligent or reckless action, options are available. One option is to hold the responsible party accountable through a personal injury suit. This type of legal action allows victims the ability to receive compensation to help cover these costs.
