SUV dangers are real for drivers

SUVs make up around 12 percent of all vehicles on the roads in the United States today. While many people view them as safe, the fact is that they are some of the most dangerous vehicles on the roads. They have a risk of rollovers, sometimes have poor visibility and can impact and crush smaller vehicles.

Manufacturers do take steps to improve the safety of these vehicles, but new vehicles aren't a solution to the older vehicles' issues when they're still on the roads. How can people in SUVs be safer? They can avoid being overconfident.

A large vehicle does protect you better, but that doesn't mean you can be overconfident of its abilities or your own. Don't ignore the rules of the road simply because you are protected by your larger vehicle. Instead, take time to learn to handle the larger vehicle well. Slow down, and recognize that your vehicle could be incredibly dangerous to others in smaller vehicles on the roads.

Interestingly, when you look at crash statistics, SUVs are less safe than other, smaller vehicles when compared pound for pound. They also have a higher risk of rolling over, which can cause serious injuries.

How can you be safer? Remember a few SUV safety tips. Know that you have limited vision and check your blind spots. Always check your mirrors before changing lanes, and consider what other drivers are doing. Don't change directions or make sharp turns too quickly; this can cause a roll-over accident.

Keeping these tips in mind can help you avoid a crash, but not all drivers are as safe. If you're hurt, you have a right to file a claim against a negligent driver.
