The impact of seat belts on reducing school bus-related injuries

Each day across the United States, more than 25 million kids are transported to school on buses, a number which is estimated to be responsible for keeping some 17 million cars from having to transport students to schools each day. When a bus accident does occur, it can be catastrophic, although they're few and far between.

Overall, the National Safety Council (NSC) has found that riding on a school bus is far safer than your child either walking or being transported in a personal car to school. Despite this, their research has shown that requiring school buses to have both shoulder and lap belts would make them even safer when transporting your kids.

While many states across the country have made seat belts available to students since 2002, only six states require the presence of seat belts in their buses. California is one of those states.

The National Highway Safety Administration (NHSA) put their support behind the idea of all school districts considering adding seat belts to their buses in 2015. This came after a 2012 simulated crash test conducted in New Jersey between a commercial vehicle and school bus. That simulation resulted in one student's death and serious injuries among others.

School bus-related injuries are unfortunately not only associated with a lack of seat belt usage, however. Students being struck by motorists as they either exit a bus or cross the street en route to their homes or school have been shown to be responsible for many fatal pedestrian accidents as well.

If your child has been either seriously injured or killed in a school bus crash, a San Bernadino, California, bus accident attorney can provide you with guidance in your legal matter.
