California changes traffic laws for 2017

According to the news from Dec. 26, new laws went into effect on Jan. 1 that could affect your driving experience. The story reports that several new transportation-related laws have gone into effect, including those related to child safety seats, lane splitting and the use of electronic devices inside vehicles. These are just a few, but some of the highlights, of the changes in the laws.

One new law is that motorists are now prohibited from using handheld phones or other devices while driving unless that item is mounted to the windshield or dashboard. The motorist is only allowed to activate the device using a single tap or swipe.

Child safety-seat laws have also changed, with a new law stating that any child under 2 years old must be in an appropriate rear-facing safety seat until he or she is at least 40 pounds or taller than 40 inches. Previously, the law only required children under 8 to be in appropriate safety seats.

California legalized motorcycle lane splitting as well. That means that motorcyclists may now pass between two lanes of vehicles legally. Motorists will need to take care to look before they move over and stay in lane to make sure there is enough room for motorcyclists who are traveling between lanes.

These are just a few of the new laws that have been put into effect. As of the first, anyone who violates these laws can be charged with an offense, and if those crimes lead to an accident, then that person could be held accountable and have to cover the expenses the victims are left with. If you were injured in such an accident, the help and guidance of an attorney can be very beneficial.
