That baby product could be lethal, but you're not alone

When you give your child a product like a teething ring or teething drops, you want that product to be safe for him. Sometimes, products pose a danger that you don't expect. For example, in 2016, there was news about teething tablets that could be loosely linked to the deaths of 10 children. Another report from the American Academy of Pediatrics informed parents that no soft bedding, including the very popular bumper systems, should be used in cribs.

Soft materials pose a threat to children and can lead to suffocation, while cribs with drop rails could fall and pinch small hands or arms. In the case of teething tablets, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration received over 400 reports of adverse events taking place when using the homeopathic products. The FDA warned parents to stop using the teething products after receiving information that they had potentially led to fever, lethargy, tremors, irritability and other symptoms in children.

These products were not recalled, and the investigation was ongoing at that point, but despite this, the company did remove the product from U.S. markets. In 2010, the same company, Hyland, was forced to recall teething tablets after the FDA reported that there were inconsistent amounts of belladonna, a potentially poisonous plant, in the tablets. Some of the adverse events reported were consistent with belladonna toxicity. The company reduced the amount of belladonna in the teething rings and reintroduced them to the market until the concerns of 2016.

Knowing that the product could be dangerous gives you the chance to choose if you want to give it to your child. If you weren't informed of dangers and your child is hurt or dies, you could have a case against the manufacturer. Our website has more information.
