Riding in the rain: What motorcyclists should consider

Rain has been falling rapidly in the state, and that means many people have had to adjust their riding styles. When it comes to riding a motorcycle in the rain, it's important to know exactly how to ride to be safe without sliding or getting into an accident.

The first thing that's important for riders is having the right equipment. Rain gear makes a difference. It helps prevent you from getting wet, and that means you're less likely to get cold while you ride. If you do get cold, there's a potential for hypothermia, so it's vital that your body is protected in a downpour.

Another thing that you should consider is your visor. When it rains, it's more common for your visor to fog up. That makes it hard to see, and it makes it more likely that you'll be in an accident. Some new helmets have ant-fog properties to prevent fog from blocking your vision.

Remember that you're not the only one who is having a harder time seeing in the rain. Drivers should always slow down and take the conditions into consideration, but many in larger vehicles do not. Unfortunately, that puts them at risk of sliding when they attempt to stop or turn. Make sure you give other vehicles plenty of space in the rain, so you know you have enough time to stop and that they have time to stop if you have to slow down. If you find that someone is following behind you too closely, it's a good idea to pull out of the way and allow them to pass. If they strike you, it's their negligence that allows you to make a claim for compensation.
