Woman charged with DUI in death of 3-year-old family friend

A 34-year-old Redlands woman was arraigned Tuesday, May 2, 2017, in San Bernardino Superior Court on charges of driving under the influence (DUI), vehicular manslaughter and murder, all stemming from an accident that claimed the life of a 3-year-old boy on Thursday, April 27, 2017. A factor that makes this story even worse is that the defendant in this case is a family friend.

The young boy and his family were in the process of crossing Base Line Street at Davidson Avenue at the time they were struck by the woman's car. A number of cars had stopped near the intersection to allow the family to cross, but the woman decided to go around them instead, immediately coming into contact with the young victim.

The woman didn't stop after striking the young boy, but instead continued driving. It was not until she struck another car with her truck some two blocks away that she finally came to a stop. It was at that location that she was ultimately arrested by police officers.

According to public records available through the San Bernardino Sheriff's Office, the woman had been arrested the night before the boy's death on suspicion of public intoxication. And, some 10 days prior to this fatal accident, she had been arraigned on suspicion of DUI.

The woman was supposed to have served a sentence of at least 20 days in jail for the DUI charges, but received credit for time served and was released one day later. Records show she was convicted of DUI dating back to 2009 as well. The woman is expected back in court for another hearing on May 10, 2017.

Regardless of the outcome of the woman's criminal case, the parents of the young boy will most likely be seeking out the assistance of a San Bernardino wrongful death attorney to file a civil suit against the woman to recover funeral and medical care costs and well as the loss of the companionship of their child.
