A Colorado surveyor dies after being struck in San Bernardino

A Colorado man was fatally struck by a car at the intersection of Mill and Pepper Avenues in San Bernardino on Sunday, May 21, 2017. The 58-year-old surveyor had been taking measurements in the center of the roadway at the time he was hit.

Witnesses to the 1:30 p.m. crash reported having seen a driver approaching from the southbound direction as he drove along Pepper Avenue immediately before the accident occurred. They noted that he appeared to have been speeding at the time. It's that increased rate of speed that is believed to have caused him to have lost control of his vehicle as he went to enter the intersection. He swerved then struck the man.

After striking the man, the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash pulled over and waited for police officers to arrive on the scene. Paramedics quickly arrived and transported the surveyor to an unidentified hospital. He succumbed to his injuries once there.

San Bernardino Police Department officials reported that the man was cooperative with their investigation. It's unclear whether charges will be filed against the motorist for his role in the fatal crash.

In many cases, when contractors are working on roadways, there will be signage warning of their existence in the area, increased fines for speeding, and potential jail sentences for reckless driving and other types of negligent driving. It's unclear if such signage existed in this case.

Even if signs like these were not posted in the area where the decedent was struck, his family may be eligible to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the man who is believed to have caused the crash on other grounds. In discussing the specifics of their loved one's death with a San Bernardino car crash attorney, he or she will be able to better inform them of the merits of filing a wrongful death case.
