A Redlands nursing assistant faces vehicular manslaughter charge

A 30-year-old Redlands nursing assistant has been charged with driving under the influence for his role in causing a fatal crash on Sunday, June 4, 2017. The accident, which occurred along the Fontana's 10 Freeway, claimed the life of 38-year-old Hemet woman.

Witnesses reported seeing the man driving his Nissan Altima in the wrong direction along the 10 Freeway immediately before he was involved in the 3:00 a.m., head-on crash with a Toyota Corolla. The impact between the two cars sent the Toyota spinning. It's then that it collided with a Volkswagen in the adjoining lane.

As soon as they arrived on the scene, paramedics immediately began working to extract the Toyota driver from what remained of her mangled car. She was then transported to the Colton-area Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. She succumbed to her injures once there.

The Nissan driver was also injured. He was transported to an area hospital with undisclosed injuries. The Volkswagen driver might have also suffered injuries as well. He declined to be transported to the hospital from the crash scene.

As for the Nissan's driver, he was arrested and charged with both vehicular manslaughter and DUI following his release from the hospital. He was later processed through the Rancho Cucamonga West Valley Detention Center. Bail was set in his case at $250,000 at the time.

By Wednesday morning, June 7, 2017, the defendant had been released from jail. It's unclear if he was successful in posting bail or whether other circumstances resulted in his release from detention.

The family of the young woman who died in this tragic accident may be entitled to recover funeral costs and other damages by filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the man accused of having struck her. In reviewing additional details surrounding the crash, a San Bernardino car accident attorney can advise them of the merits of filing a claim.
