An alleged drunk Cal State San Bernardino student kills passenger

A single-car crash claimed the life of one California State University student and left another significantly injured early on the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 6.

The crash occurred just after 1:12 a.m., near campus in San Bernardino. According to witness statements, the 20-year-old driver of a Honda Civic was seen speeding as he drove eastbound along Kendall Drive just moments before crashing.

Apparently, it was as he attempted to turn left to head northbound onto University Avenue, that he overcomepensated. It's then that he collided into a nearby light pole at the intersection of Kendall and University.

Impact from the collision caused the 2017 Honda to immediately catch on fire. Witnesses who saw the crash occur quickly rushed to the scene and attempted to extract the vehicle's two occupants from the car. While they were able to get the driver out fairly quickly, they weren't as lucky in getting his passenger out.

It's believed that the passenger died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was tranported to Colton's Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he was listed as being in critical condition.

A police investigation into the crash got underway right away and continued as the sun came up. Police have preliminarily determined that alcohol may have played a role in causing the crash. It's unclear if charges will be filed against the driver if it's indeed confirmed that his intoxicated driving resulted in his passenger's death.

When a passenger dies in a car crash due to a driver's negligent behavior, his or her family member is, in many cases, entitled to collect future lost wages, funeral expenses and other costs related to his or her untimely death. If you've lost a loved one in a senseless vehicle crash with an intoxicated motorist, then a San Bernardino car accident attorney can advise you of your right to file a claim in your respective case.
