A 10 freeway multi-vehicle crash in Rialto claims the lives of 5

Five motorists lost their lives in a multi-vehicle tractor-trailer crash along eastbound 10 freeway right outside of Rialto on Friday, Feb. 16.

According to witness statements taken at the crash scene, a concrete pump truck had been traveling westbound along the freeway when its driver apparently lost control and crashed into the center divider. He reportedly then crossed into oncoming traffic.

It's then that he apparently struck at least three passenger vehicles as well as a motorcycle. Each of those motorists and their passengers died instantaneously after being collided into head-on.

The impact of the crash was also apparently so forceful that it caused the concrete truck to land on its side. It then caught fire. That fire quickly spread to the other vehicles involved until very little other than their metal frames remained. Firefighters arriving on the scene quickly put out the blaze. The trucker apparently suffered relatively minor injuries in the crash.

Eastbound lanes of the 10 freeway ultimately remained closed until around 3 a.m. Saturday morning. It's during that time that investigators set out to determine what caused the crash and crews worked to clean up the charred debris.

To make matters worse, as motorists set out to navigate around the crash in an effort to continue on their way, many motorists crossed into the right shoulder. For some motorists with low-lying vehicles, the quicksand there swallowed up their cars, creating even more of a headache for cleanup crews.

A spokesperson for California Highway Patrol noted that their investigators have yet to determine what led the trucker to lose control of his truck. They also haven't decided whether he'll be charged for his role in causing the fatal crash.

If your loved one has been killed in a motor vehicle crash on one of California's freeways, then a San Bernardino wrongful death attorney can advise you of your right to recover funeral expenses and other costs.
