Many car accidents take place due to the same factors

Whether for business or for pleasure, you likely travel the roads a considerable amount. Driving may feel like second nature to you as often as you have to get behind the wheel. Of course, no matter how many times you start the engine, you always want to keep safety your top priority.

One of the best ways to avoid accidents on the road is to understand what typically causes them. This information can help you remain a more aware driver and focus on avoiding potentially dangerous activities yourself.

Factors in crashes

Though many car accidents have common causes, individuals still participate in these notoriously dangerous activities while driving. Some of the common factors in crashes include the following:

  • Speeding: Certainly, everyone goes over the speed limit now and again, but this action lands as the second most common cause of crashes.
  • Distraction: These days, distractions are everywhere you turn. Even simply daydreaming can result in a driver not paying attention long enough to end up in an accident.
  • Weather: Of course, you likely cannot stay home any time it rains, but you can make accommodations for driving in inclement weather. Slowing down and keeping greater following distances could help prevent a collision.
  • Improper following distance: Speaking of following distances, if a person drives too closely to the car in front of him or her, also known as tailgating, the chances of a crash increase substantially.
  • Impairment: Drugs and alcohol can easily hinder a driver's abilities, and drunk driving is one of the most-deadly causes of accidents.
  • Failing to follow traffic signals: People often try to skirt through yellow lights or quickly run a red light before too much time has passed. However, even if a light has only been red for a second, it still means stop, and running it could lead to a serious crash.

Of course, these are only a few of the common causes of car accidents. As a driver, you have a responsibility to remain as safe as possible, and while it may seem difficult, it is worth the effort if it keeps you from causing an accident.

Suffering injuries

Sadly, even if you do your best behind the wheel, other drivers may not. This means that you could end up suffering serious injuries in a crash caused by another driver for any number of reasons. If this does happen, you do not have to simply contend with your pain and financial hardships that result. You could have reason to take legal action against the driver considered at fault in order to seek compensation for damages.
